materials and suggested cleaning methods

Silver Cleaning Instructions
When cleaning your silver, be sure to wear
gloves to protect your skin, and some sort
of eye protection if you will be using a
brush. An old toothbrush can be
effective at getting in those hard to reach
spots, but be gentle so you don't pop any
stones or break delicate parts.
Don't use this ammonia based cleaning
solution on organic gemstones like pearls,
amber, or corals. Also, emeralds,
rubies and sapphires should only be cleaned
with warm soapy water. Garnets can
crack if handled roughly, so scrub with
care! Cleaning Gold Jewelry
Unlike silver jewelry, gold jewelry will not
tarnish. It can build up an
accumulation of oils from your skin or from
moisturizers, sunscreen, etc. To clean
gold jewelry, just put some liquid dish
washing detergent in a small container with
some warm water. After letting the
piece(s) soak for 5-10 minutes, swirl them
in the water or use a toothbrush to gently
scrub any accumulation from crevices or
around stones. Again, be careful not
to loosen the stone or scrub too hard.
Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaners
Ultrasonic jewelry cleaners are a great way
to really clean up your jewelry, but care
must be taken with semiprecious and precious
stones. Ultrasonic jewelry cleaners
work by bombarding jewelry with high
frequency sound that creates bubbles where
the solution comes into contact with solid
materials like silver and gold jewelry or
stones. Ultrasonic cleaners are great
for getting in all the nooks and crannies
that are otherwise inaccessible.
Ultrasonic jewelry cleaners should not be
used with emeralds, soft or porous stones,
or with stones that have inclusions or have
been treated with oil or fillers to improve
the appearance of fissures.
